Road safety is SO important! This week, I saw two children run across the road without looking, and one child run into the road to fetch a letter that had blown away. Luckily, there were no cars driving on the road and so nobody was harmed. If there had been cars driving along Roseberry Crescent at the time, the outcome could have been very different.

During assembly on Tuesday, I reminded children of the Green Cross Code, a simple guide to keep you safe on the roads, and asked them to promise to be safe whilst near roads.

Find a safe place to cross – where there is a crossing nearby, make sure you use it. Otherwise make sure you choose a place where you can see everything on the road and everyone on the road can see you!

Stop just before you get to the kerb – do not get too close to the traffic and make sure you can clearly see everything. If there is no pavement, keep back from the edge of the road whilst still making sure you can see approaching traffic.

Look all around and listen for traffic – traffic can come from any direction. Make sure you listen as well as look because sometimes you can hear traffic before you see it. If a vehicle is coming, always let it pass, then look around again – do not cross until there is a safe gap in the traffic and you are certain there is plenty of time. Even if traffic is a long way off, it may be going very fast.

Finally, if all is clear, you may cross – when there is no traffic near, walk straight across the road, and always keep looking and listening for traffic as you cross.
