Today the children thought about healthy food and how we make sure they eat a balanced diet.
The children learnt the names of the different food groups, these being: protein, dairy, carbohydrates, fruit and vegetable and fats.
Then we discussed which foods fit into each food group. We found out that potatoes, pasta and rice were in the carbohydrate group – they give us energy and help us to keep moving.
Fish and meat were in the protein group – they help us to grow and repair our muscles and skin.
Vegetables and fruit help us glow. They make our skin healthy and our eyes shine bright.
Dairy products help our bones to be strong.
After finding out this information the children designed their own healthy plate. They had to ensure it contained a balanced diet with two portions of carbohydrates, two portions of fruit or vegetables, one portion of protein and one diary product.
Finally, we talked about why it’s still important to add a little bit of fat to your diet. Each child chose something from the fat group to have as a little treat after such a healthy plate of food!
