Today we have been learning all about how Victorian homes differed. We looked at two types of home, rich and poor.
Poor house-
- The homes had no inside bathroom – Victorian people had to wash themselves in a metal bath. There was only enough water to fill the bath half full and everyone in the house shared the bath water!
- There were no inside toilets. There was one toilet to share between the whole street. If you needed the toilet during the night you could use the bed pan which was kept under your bed.
- In these homes there were no kitchens. They had to keep a fire burning all the time. This was used for cooking and to keep the house warm.
- If it was cold, the Victorians used a pan warmer, which they put inside their bed sheets to warm up their bed.
- In the Victorian times they had no electricity or running water. They had to collect water from a pump which was shared by the village and, for light, they used candles.
Rich house-
- The furniture was comfortable because they had cushions on the seats.
- They had posh bedrooms because they had beautiful bedding and heavy curtains around their beds.
- The rich homes had a water pump inside their kitchens.
- They used a different type of bath, which would be emptied after every person had used it.
- The homes were decorated with wallpaper and carpets.
- They had fire places in every room which heated the whole house.
Which house would you like to live?
James said, ” I would like to live in the rich house, because it had a posh bath.”
Lucy said, ” I would like to live in the rich house, because it has posh things inside.”
Theo said, ” I would like to live in the rich house, because it has lovely, pretty things in.”
Hattie said, ” I would like to live in the poor house, because I’d like to make sure everyone had a chance at living in the rich house.”
