Wow - what a week!

I am so very proud of you all on the first week of our online learning. You have shown you are super independent learners and have created some amazing work on our project 'Uninhabited Island'.

Here is a selection of the work you have produced.

Diary Entry -

Today was a day I will never forget …

As we anxiously approached the island, I suddenly felt a knot in my stomach not knowing what I would find on this deserted landmass. As this beautiful yet fragile island came into view, I immediately felt a sense of excitement knowing that climate change had not yet made an impact on this place of beauty. As my cousin (Barney) and I shared our thoughts, we were unexpectedly interrupted by the noise of wildlife encased within this delicate environment!

As I got closer, palm trees and white beaches could be seen. Furthermore, from the tweets of birds to the lapping of the waves, it was like a symphony. From its tall, rugged cliffs to the lush foliage; it felt like paradise.

As our boat ran aground on the reef, we clambered out into the lukewarm water to find an abundance of sealife brushing past our legs . Quickly, the water got shallower and without knowing it, our feet suddenly came into contact with the scorching hot sand, burning them to the point that they may never be the same again. However, I was too excited to care. Following our discovery , we did not  go back to the boat to collect our belongings, 5 seconds was the time it took us to be off the beach bouncing energetically through the wilderness .

Venturing inwards, my heart rate began to pick up as I discovered a beautiful lagoon . I immediately felt more relaxed and calmer .The cool breeze was a refreshing feeling  against the suns’ rays. Furthermore, the gently rippling turquoise water intensified  my growing acknowledgment of the amazing discovery that we had just made . Thinking about it this finding might change the world in that there might still be a hope to fight for against climate change.  On the other hand, a wave of sorrow came over me realising that  there are many other places like this that have become ruined by  unwanted visitors.

I could smell the salty ozone layer in which the island felt calm. The air was hot yet clean and fresh to the skin.  However, the smells were not all good. I could also detect the pungent smell of rotting seaweed . What would we discover next?

This island is situated on the outskirts of the Caribbean and the closest form of land to this island is Mexico. It is in neither the southern or northern hemisphere- it straddles the equator. This island has lush vegetation which is towered over by a set of tall, rugged cliffs and huge, precariously balanced rocks. In addition to this, the beaches are long and sandy -perfect for surfing. Once off the sand, a set of  palm trees and a floor of mangoes and coconuts come into view . This island is situated in the Atlantic Ocean. Despite this, in the height of summer the water can be up to 30 degrees celsius and the air temperature can be into the high forties on a daily basis.

Dear Diary,

I can hardly believe it! I am writing today from a beautiful, exotic, undiscovered island. After days of being lost in the Pacific Ocean, I finally spotted some land on the horizon. I steadily rowed towards it and eventually I landed on the white, sandy beach of this magnificent island.

I felt nervous but also excited as I took my first steps along the beach. The sun was beating down on my back as I started to explore. As I walked further into the island, I looked up and could see that tall trees surrounded the island like a barrier. I carried on walking even further into the island and finally reached the centre. There in front of me was a huge waterfall with a cave. I wondered if there were any people living on the island and if there were, would they be friendly? But I soon realised that no one lives here except for all kinds of strange animals and birds.

I have never seen animals like some of these creatures. There is a bird that is multi-coloured and spreads its feathers out like a peacock. My favourite animal I have seen so far looks a bit like a parrot and it is red with rainbow wings. I saw a creature that looked like a lion, but it was red, orange, and yellow. I thought it was going to be fierce and maybe attack me, but instead it came up to me and welcomed me like a dog. The animal that puzzled me the most looked like a hippo and it was red and blue stripped. When I saw the hippo like creature, it was drinking from a lake with some other mysterious animals.

All of a sudden, the animals all ran off as if something had spooked them. Quietly, I followed them and after a few minutes we came to a cave which they all ran inside. I crept in too and realised this must be where they sleep and decided to stay here as well as it was getting dark outside.

I can’t wait to explore the island some more tomorrow and see what other creatures live amongst this island.
