As part of our Engage for our new topic ‘Stargazers’, the children explored size and scale of the planets in our Solar System. They worked out the order of the planets and then had to match everyday objects to the planets to understand the scale. We used a melon for Jupiter, a grapefruit for Saturn, an apple for Uranus, a satsuma for Neptune, a cherry tomato for Venus and another for Earth, a blueberry for Mars, a peppercorn for Mercury and a fitness ball for the Sun. We then found out facts about each planet.
We also researched Day and Night, the Earth's rotation, and its orbit around the Sun. The children were amazed by the fact that in some places, at certain times of the year, the sun doesn't rise and in others it doesn't set!
