Our biology-based topic, Burps, Bottom and Bile, is proving to be a lot of fun while we are learning important skills as scientists. We have compared the effect of different liquids on eggshells, which we think would be a similar effect on our teeth.
In our first experiment, we were amazed to find the eggshell had completely dissolved in vinegar, leaving behind the translucent membrane with the white and yolk inside. The eggshell coated in toothpaste, however, did provide some protection and was only partly dissolved.
In our second experiment, we discovered that orange juice did the most damage to the eggshell. Full sugar cola caused the eggshell to rub away and diet cola left the eggshell a little harder. We concluded that these drinks all have acids in them, which can cause our teeth to decay.
