Year 2 children had a fabulous fact packed afternoon with Derek, a local beekeeper from Great Ayton, who came into school to talk to us all about bees.  It was fascinating to develop our knowledge of bees and to learn even more incredible facts about these special superorganisms!  Derek wore his white bee keeping suit and explained to us about how bees need to be smoked in order to keep them calm when their hives are being inspected.  Did you know that out of the 20,000 species of bees that live in the world, only 6 are honey bees?  The children were able to taste local heather honey as well as roll beeswax to make their own candles.  They smell just like honey and look absolutely beautiful!  We want to say a very big thank you to Derek for coming into Roseberry to talk so passionately about bees, we thoroughly enjoyed discovering more amazing facts about bees and why they’re so important to us all.
