Year 2 welcomed Derek, a local bee keeper, into their classroom this week to learn more about bees! We discovered that out of the 20,000 different species of bees found in the world only 6 of them are honey bees! We were also amazed to learn that in a bees life time, a single bee will only make 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey – so next time you’re spreading honey onto your toast just remember the amount of bees it has taken to produce a single pot. The children were fascinated to see the frames which bees live in inside the hive and couldn’t wait to taste some of the delicious honey which Derek extracted. All of the children had an opportunity to roll sheets of wax and make their very own wax candle which they all took home. Wow, we’ve all learnt a lot more amazing facts about bees! Thank you, Derek!
