Year 1 have had a super start to this half term.  We have started our new topic of Rio de Vida.  It’s started with looking at the carnival celebration in Brazil and why it so important to the Brazilian people. We listened to some Samba music and watched some of the parades, to see all the fabulous costumes and floats.

The children then had a go at designing their own costumes and making their own masks.  They look fabulous!

The children also enjoyed learning about Samba music with Mrs Channing during their weekly catch up.

In literacy, the children have enjoyed telling each other about special family moments and why their families are important to them.  We have started reading Anna Hibiscus song, which is about a family that live in Africa.  We started to think about the similarities  and differences between where they live and where we live.

The children have also been looking at healthy snack and designing their own fruit faces.  There was some fantastic ideas!

To end the week and for screen free Friday, the children went outside to enjoy some sunshine and to do a spot of gardening.  Before half term we planted some carrots, sweet peas, and peas and these have grown in the classroom so much, that we were able to plant them into bigger pots!

The children did a fantastic job of carefully potting the seedlings on.  They are now watered and back in the classroom until they are a little bit bigger. The children are looking forward to planting them outside and watching them grow.
