What a brilliant start to the week! Yesterday, the class enjoyed learning all about the Romans during an online session from Durham University. They looked at maps of where the Romans had conquered and learned that names ending in 'Chester' were once Roman settlements. The historian then talked about how artefacts provided lots of clues and information about their lives at the time. He told us that in the river at Piercebridge there were gold and bronze ornaments found. It is believed that these were thrown in the river as offerings to the gods. The class then looked at other Roman relics and using clues had to work out what these objects could have been. I was amazed with the classes' suggestions, one child, even guessing that the 'brick like' artefact was once part of a Roman underfloor heating! The children also began to learn about Roman soldiers and their different roles within the army. It was a brilliant session and very informative. A big thanks goes out to Olivia and the historians at Durham University.
