Our new topic is called ‘Build it up’. This topic teaches children about the environments that they share with others, including their homes, school and places in the local community. Throughout we will learn about a variety of structures and materials.
To start off our topic, we thought about where we live. All of us live in a house made of bricks. Afterward we looked up different types of houses. Here is what we found:
- Straw house
- Boat house
- Tree house
- Caravan
- Hotel
- Apartment
Afterwards we had lots of fun in the creative area. We used washing up liquid and shaving foam to pretend we were cementing blocks together. We made houses, trains, boats and hotels.
On Wednesday, we drew pictures of our own homes. We chatted about what they look like, and noticed 2D shapes whilst drawing. Even our littlest of poppets had a go!
On Thursday,
we looked at some pictures of builders working hard at a building site. We discussed what was happening in the pictures. We could recognise a lot of the tools they were using.
“Dig up the road, it’s sucking worms out”. – Grace
“Saw for the houses” - Sofia
“That’s a jackhammer, it breaks the floor”. – Jasper
“Cement mixer, for the cement, it goes hard”. – Bonnie
Afterwards, we listened to a video of different construction sounds and matched them to the pictures. To finish off our session we explored a range of musical instruments and the sounds they make. We tried to copy the sounds the builders made in the video.
