Year 2 2018 – 2019

Year 2 have had another incredibly busy week!

In Literacy, we read ‘The Dark’ by Lemony Snicket.  We drew what we thought the dark looks like, wrote advice for Laszlo, and made predictions about what we thought might be in the drawers in the basement.

This week, as part of our ‘Super Human’ topic, we learned all about our sense of smell.  We were all given a cotton bud with a certain scent. In Literacy, we have been doing a lot of work based around the text, ‘The Robot and the Bluebird’.  The main characters have inspired us to learn about similarities and differences between humans and robots, and this week, we have learned about birds and how we can help to look after them.

On the 1st December, a tiny door appeared in Year 2 and ever since, we’ve received little notes from Brian, the elf!  He even left us some magical seeds to plant in sugar, and we were amazed when they grew into lovely lollipops!

This week was S.A.W (Science, Art, Writing) week and the theme was ‘Lunchbox Science’.

On Tuesday, we learned all about what to do if somebody is unresponsive, and even learnt how to use the new defibrillator.

On Friday, we enjoyed the Bhangra music and dancing in assembly.

We’ve been very busy making lighthouses, complete with working electricity!

First, we visited the RNLI lifeboat house where we watched a video of a rescue. We saw the uniforms and life jackets and looked at the offshore lifeboat. Then, we walked to the pier for lunch.  After that, we visited the lighthouse before going to the RNLI museum.

What a busy week we’ve had!  In Literacy, we used our RAG words, idiom of the week, and our grammar focus ‘apostrophes for possession’ to retell part of a story.  We’ve also learnt how to use the highlighter pens to retrieve the answers to our comprehension questions.

Today, in Literacy, we worked collaboratively to read a thank you letter to Grace Darling. We used a coloured key to highlight the steps to success.  Tomorrow, we are going to use what we have learned today in order to write our own letters.
